UPB chancellor nominees show vision papers on next chancellorship

Dr. Joel M. Addawe and Dr. Wilfredo V. Alangui, nominees for the next chancellor of University of the Philippines Baguio (UPB), presented their vision papers and addressed issues asked by the constituents of the university in a public forum held at UPB Teatro Amianan on Monday, April 22.

Dr. Adawwe said he envisions the university to be digitally literate as he states "think globally, act locally."

"High-speed internet access, reliable hardware, and [a] secure campus network may be prioritized. Strong cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive data and ensure privacy and security for all users,” he stated.

Dr. Adawwe’s vision paper proposed the cultivation of culture, widening experiences, strengthening relationships, and enhancing alumni and external relations through digital platforms.

He also aims to have infrastructures developed wherein more spaces within the campus such as enough classrooms, laboratories, student spaces, office spaces, function rooms, dormitories, and staff housing.

Dr. Alangui, as a continuant, re-presented his vision paper entitled “Magisip, Maghilom, Maglingkod” which mainly addressed Academic Excellence and Academic Freedom, Nationalism and Public Service, and Democratic Governance and Dignity in the workplace.

“My brand of leadership is transparent, consultative and collegial. I am kind and fair, also firm and decisive, but open to suggestions and constructive criticisms,” Dr. Alangui stated.

The public forum didn’t only focus on presenting vision papers but also addressed certain issues about red-tagging, indigenous peoples, safe spaces, leadership, and among other concerns through a question and answer portion.

One of the questions asked was about the use of the Freedom Wall in relation to the nominees’ plans about the student’s safe spaces campaign.

“We should have committees and offices that should handle those problems. And I would suggest again that there should also be a person in the legal aspect who will handle that,” Dr. Addawe said.

“I-institutionalize ang safe spaces committee led by different organizations, Kasarian, Student Relations Office (SRO), and even the students. You will get my full support,” Dr. Alangui explained.

He urged the students to be careful and be sure with accusations as it can greatly affect a person’s future.

“Kung ano man yung sa tingin niyong relevant or will ensure the safety of our students in the campus, we will support that,” Dr. Alangui added.
